J
..
Working To Restore Nature
6.2.2 In-Situ Enhanced Bioremediation
This remediation alternative involves the stimulation of microflora or bacteria to degrade
..j hydrocarbons. Stimulation of the microbes is achieved by introduction of nutrients and
oxygen through existing wells or trenches. Groundwater is usually pumped and
recirculated to control migration of the dissolved petroleum constituents and to distribute
the oxygen and nutrients. This alternative is most effective in projects with shallow
=> groundwater in permeable soils with relatively volatile contaminants.
4- 6.2.3 Free Product Removal with Groundwater Extraction
This remediation alternative would involve removal of floating free product using a
manual or automated slimmer. If the free product layer is of adequate thickness an
automated skimmer can be used to remove free product on a continuous basis.
F 1 Groundwater extraction can be used to induce a cone of depression in the water table,
which could increase the effectiveness of free product removal. Due to the low level
of BTEX constituents in the dissolved phase, extracted groundwater could likely be
 .i
discharged, without pretreatment, to the City's sanitary sewer system. Recovered free
3 product would necessarily be disposed of under hazardous waste manifest.
7.0 REFERENCES
O California Department of Water Resources, 1981, Water Well Standards: State_of
California, Bulletin 74-81, 92 pg.
=; o State of California, Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley Region, TJ-
Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Prelimina1y Investigation and Evaluation o
.= Underground Tank Sites, revised March 9, 1992.
0 United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, Stockton West 7.5'
Quadrangle, 1987.
f REPORTS/PAR1093.FNL 10
Irl
