KLEINFELDER
The three- to five-feet thick transition seal may be excessive. Consider limiting the
transition seal to a two- to three-feet thickness.
In accordance with the deepening of the monitoring wells to a total depth of
approximately 30-feet (as discussed in the previous condition above), the grout seal will
extend from the ground surface to approximately 10-feet below the ground surface. In
addition to increasing the total thickness of the grout seal, the bentonite transition seal
between the well filter pack and cement will be limited to a total thickness of
approximately 2 to 3-feet as requested by the RWQCB.
Section 5.1 lists the proposed analytes selected to characterize groundwater quality.
Please add chloride to the list. If the facility uses sanitation chemicals that contain
chlorine, add chlorine and trihalomethanes to the list. The response to this conditional
approval must state what sanitation chemicals are used at the facility.
In accordance with the RWQCB request, chloride will be added to the list of analyses
for each groundwater sample. At this time the sanitation products used by California
Nuggets (information supplied by California Nuggets) include the following:
Name Manufacturer Site Use
Simple Green Sunshine Makers, Inc. Process internal
1-(800)-228-0709 equipment
cleaner/sanitizer
Super Clean Castrol N. America Auto External equipment
1-(800)-227-8765 cleaner/degreaser
Quat Unknown at this time De-calcifier for piping
The ingredients in Simple Green do not include chlorine. The Simple Green is used
during the cleaning processes for the internal equipment following the processing of the
corn nut product. The discharge is directed to the wastewater/process water drainage
system.
The Super Clean is used to clean the external mechanisms of the machinery used for
processing. It is typically used in spray applications with nuisance drips to the floor.
The Super Clean product does not include chlorine and is not expected to reach the
waste or process water drainage system. It should be noted that the Super Clean
product contains an ingredient listed as proprietary or trade secret which is also
included in a wide range of automotive products such as fuel and oil treatments,
lubricants, degreasers; home products such as sealants, adhesive removers and stains;
landscape and pesticide products such as cement stains, 2 cycle mix, ant/spider killer;
and pet care products such as pet shampoo and aquarium water conditioner; just to
name a few. Super clean residual product is not expected to reach the waste or
process water drainage system as it is not used in a voluminous or flush type cleaning
procedure.
It is unclear at this time whether "Quay' contains chlorine. California Nuggets has used
Quat in the past for decalcification of the piping in the process and was not able to
locate any containers of Quat; as it has not been used on the site since the installation
of new piping within the facility and the implementation of water softeners. There are
several products under the "Quay' name which include HEPACIDE QUAT II, TB-CIDE
QUAT, DECON-QUAT 100, QUAT 256, BUCKEYE SANICARE PINE QUAT,
50890.EO1/ST05L236 Page 2 of 3
C 2005 Kleinfelder,Inc.
