Excavation was required in the area
because sampling after tank removal operations showed that
hydrocarbon contamination was present in the area at levels above
1,000 parts per million (ppm) . The results indicate that soil
contaminated at levels above 1,000 ppm has been removed, and the
remaining soil in the tank cavity area contains low to moderate
levels of hydrocarbon contamination.
The excavation re".:hed a maximum depth of approximately 22 feet,
or 6 feet below the ground water surface. An organic vapor
analyzer was used to give a field estimation of contaminant
levels in the soil removed. The excavated soil was placed under
plastic covers in an ad3acent vacant lot in piepazation for
future treatment by aeration.
Samples were collected at four separate locations in the walls of
the tank cavity. Locations are depicted on the attached
Generalized Site Plan. S-16-1 was collected from the south wall,
at an approximate depth of 16 feet below the around surface.
Sample S-2 was collected from the north wall, at a depth of
approximately 16 feet. S-18-3 came from the east wall,
approximately 18 feet 'selow the ground surface, and S-18-5 was
collected at a depth o.: 18 feet in the western part of the tank
cavity.
