January 23, 1987
AGS Job #8696-2
Page 2
Samples were analyzed by Applied Geosystems' laboratory, which is
certified by the state of California for the analyses performed.
Samples were analyzed for total volatile hydrocarbons (TVH) and
gasoline constituents (BTEX - Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene,
Xylene) .
We interpret the available chemical, data to indicate that soil
contamination has been effectively mitigated to the north and
west of the tank cavity. Samples S-16-1 and S-18-3 were
contaminated at higher levels, and were beyond the reach of the
equipment used. in our opinion, further excavation to the south
would undermine the loading dock of the Creamery, and further
excavation to the east would require widening of the tank cavity.
Can the basis of our field observations of the decrease or
attenuation in levels of contamination with distance from the
central part of the tank cavity, we consider it most likely that
contamination levels above 100 ppm are restricted to an area less
than five feet from the currently exposed south and east walls of
the tank cavity.
• A copy of this letter should be forwarded to Ms. Laurie Cotulla,
of the San Joaquin Local Health District, and to Mr. Gordon
Boggs, of the California Regional water Quality Control Board.
If you have any questions regarding the information presented
here, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Applied Geosystems
Andrew P.
