MAP 07 '90 17:04 R.H.L. ?AMENTO 9166464679 P.14i14
Integrity Testing
The Pipe Jacket is an open ended guttering system, therefore only a 5 psi air pressure soap test or hydrostatic-test
need be performed to determine the systems containment integrity.
Monitoring Capability
The design of the Pipe Jacket Containment system is such that any leak in the primary pipe will flow from the high end of
the secondary pipe to the low end which terminates into a collection sump. A leak can be monitored by periodic visual
Inspections of the collection sump or by installing a leak detection probe which Is connected to an electronic monitor.
Approximate leak location can be achieved by the Installation of zone observation wells installed at specific points along
the piping line. These zone observation wells consist of a monitor fitting with a built in collection sump, to trap leaking
product. This fitting is connected to a riser pipe which located under a street access manhole. The riser is sealed at the
top by a cap that is air-tight but can be removed for pipe inspection. It can also be fitted with a leak detection probe.
Total Containment, Inc. manufacturers the TCI Leak Detection System that is designed to be effectively installed
in both the monitoring applications.
Guide Specifications
Short Form
The contractor shall provide the Pipe Jacket Secondary Containment System, as manufactured by Total Containment,
Inc., for containment of the underground primary piping system. This secondary containment system shall be installed
and integrity tested in accordance with the manufacturers published installation instructions.
Long Form
Design: The secondary containment system for underground piping, shall be of such a design, that it wl,
completely contain the primary piping from under the dispenser to the tank, Including the submersible pump housing
and all swing Joints. It shall allow for complete inspection of all primary pipe connections, during the primary pipe
air-pressure/soap testing, before the secondary containment system is sealed.
Product Compatability: The secondary containment system for underground piping shall be compatible
with the products to be stored.
Corrosion Resistance: The secondary containment system for underground piping shall be non-corrosive,
di-electric, non-degradable and resistant to attack from microbial growth.
Structural Integrity: The secondary containment system for underground piping shall be of such a design and
made of-materials to have sufficient strength to withstand the maximum underground burial loads.
integrity Testing: The secondary containment system shall undergo a 5 psi air pressure/soap test or hydrostatic
test upon completion to determine its secondary containment integrity. This testing shall be In compliance with the
manufacturers published installation instructions.
Monitoring Capability: The secondary containment system for underground piping shall have a monitored
collection sump at the low end of the containment system.
C011ectlon Sumps: The collection sumps located a the low end of the secondary containment system for
underground piping shall meet the following requirements:
1. Provide water tight tank, connection, pipe exits and conduit exits.
2. Have a lid designed to prevent surface water from draining down into the sump.
3. Have a vent which will allow any collection of vapors to escape.
4. To have sufficient strength to keep out the surrounding back fill material.
TOTAL . ..
