PILOT TESTING
The primary purpose ofthis task is to determine the effectiveness of using an oxygen release
compound(ORC to remediate to petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted groundwater at the site to
closure levels. When hydrated, the ORCtl°;vleases high levels of oxygen into the groundwater
over a period of roughly six, months, The elevated levels of oxygen degrade the petroleum
hydrocarbons compounds in two ways: 1. through direct chemical oxidation,of the petroleum
4 hydrocarbon compounds;and 2.)through stimulation ofnatural microorganism which have the
capability to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. The aerobic conditions enhanced by the()RC
appliccattion`'acrelerate the, degradation of the petroleum hydrocarbon compounds by several orders
ofmagnstude. Background information on QRC*is included in Appendix B. ,Information on
fiy
ORC ,effectiveness for; mediation 0fMTBE is included in AppendixC. It is a petted that the ORC O-application will result in a substantial:decrease in petroleum - `i Y#`r
hydrocarbon concentrations in the well within six months Depending on the concentrations
J
obtained within the six i h cid,Apex may elected to replace the spent ORC*with a new
application and continue the pilot test foranother sur months. ?
TASK 2. uARTERLY GR4UN W 1ER.MONITORINfi
It is assuumd that twc to thy► uarters fmozutonn we sam to 11 be required to dn l 1
the effectiveness the C>RC'applScation an reducing the cencerttratiort of petroleum
hydrocarbons in monitoring well-3. PILOT TEST EVALUATION
Based on the"data collected from the quarterly
,,; + y groundwater monitoring activities at the site,Apex
'Will assess the effectiveness of CIRC+°in reducing the petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater
y,
to closure'leveIs. To further verify the reductions in petroleum hydrocarbons, Apex proposes to
use tt_Geoprobeto test soil and groundwater in a maximunn
of three locations.
