k KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-2182-24
February 20, 1990
The results of the Moisture Content and Dry Density Determinations
are noted on the Logs of Borings at the corresponding sample
locations . All the tests are summarized on Plate VIII .
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
General
Based on our laboratory tests and experience, the surface clayey
fill soils and underlying grey-brown clay soils are expansive.
Foundations and floor slabs placed on these clayey soils are
subject to possible damage resulting from heaving or shrinking of
the clayey soils due to moisture changes . However, it is our
opinion that the structures can be supported on the expansive soils
provided foundations extend to a depth where moisture fluctuations
are low and the soils are prepared as recommended in the following
sections of this report. We recommend floor slabs be underlain by
moisture-conditioned existing soils and/or granular nonexpansive
Engineered Fill . Recommendations for foundations, moisture
conditioning and other items are contained in the following
sections of this report.
Foundations
It is our opinion that the proposed structures can be supported on
spread and continuous foundations bearing on the existing soils or
on Engineered Fill. We recommend that all foundations extend a
minimum depth of 18 inches below lowest adjacent finished soil
subgrade, interior or exterior, whichever controls . Below this
depth, moisture fluctuations should be minimal . Any soft soils or
5
