f) Storage Area #7 North of the Hazardous Waste Storage Building
Approximately 25 pieces of new or refurbished oil -filled electrical
equipment are stored as working stock on this asphalt paved area. This
area drains to an oil/water separator located at the west end of the yard.
The separator would contain any oil spilled within this area. The amount
of oil -filled equipment stored in this area varies. The volume of oil in the
various pieces of equipment ranges from 10 to 200 gallons.
Possible Spill Occurrence:
i) Overturning during
The volume of oil that could reasonably
handling with a
be expected to spill is 10-200 gallons.
forklift:
Operations and maintenance personnel are
trained in safe operation of forklifts to avoid
such occurrences. Spills would be contained
by the underground oil/water separator located
at the west end of the yard. The separator has
ample holding capacity for the maximum spill
that may occur.
ii) Leakage during Any equipment that shows signs of
storage: leakage is immediately drained of oil or placed
in a plastic -lined wood box. The storage area
is inspected daily for signs of leakage. No
more than 5 to 10 gallons of oil could
reasonably be expected to leak before it would
be discovered. Any leakage would be
contained by the oil/water separator located at
the west end of the yard.
g) Transformer Oil Handling Area
Approximately 40 to 50 pieces of returned electrical equipment are
stored in this area. The equipment could possibly contain PCB
contaminated oil. The equipment has been taken out of service for
reasons of failure, replacement or repair. The equipment is stored in
plastic lined wood boxes while being stored here. The area is a concrete
slab surrounded by concrete curbs. There is a drain valve installed in the
curb to release uncontaminated rain water. The volume of oil in the
various pieces of equipment ranges from 10 to 70 gallons.
3-12
