Soil samples will be collected in 2" x 6" decontaminated brass sleeves The samples will be
described, screened for the presence of hydrocarbons and promptly sealed with aluminum foil
' or teflon tape and plastic end caps The samples will be individually placed in "ziplock"
bags, sealed with security tape and stored in an ice chest with water ice until delivery to the
selected laboratory for analysis Chain-of-custody records will be maintained for all samples
A minimum of five soil samples will be collected from the sidewalls and the bottom of the
excavation, in accordance with County guidelines In addition, one composite sample per 50
cubic yards of stockpiled soil will be sampled and analyzed for the sample parameters In
addition, the composite samples will be analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
LUFT manual metals, and reactivity, corrosivity and ignitability (RCI) to satisfy analytical
requirements prior to disposal of soil to either a landfill or a soil recycling facility
Additional analyses that may be required (for disposal purposes) will be performed by a fixed
laboratory Both laboratories will be certified to perform the required analyses by the
California State Department of Health Services.
2.3.4 Vapor Observation Point
When excavation activities are completed, a vapor observation point will be installed at the
bottom of the excavation to provide an opportunity to monitor volatile petroleum
hydrocarbons (if any) emanating from the soil. Figure 3 provides a schematic illustration of
the vapor observation point constriction A non-woven geotextile fabric will be laid into the
bottom of the excavation prior to vapor point installation This fabric will allow for relatively
free movement of vapors into the bottom of the excavation, and prevent infiltration of native
material
Approximately two inches of pea gravel or equivalent will then be "tailgated" into the
excavation. A flinch diameter, 0 040-inch PVC well screen, capped at one end, will then be
' set on top of the gravel along the longest length of the excavation. A 90' PVC elbow ,joint
will be attached to the open end of the well screen and a 4 inch PVC riser will be attached
This riser will extend to ground surface Additional pea gravel will be tailgated into the
excavation until approximately two inches above the well screen Care will be taken to
ensure that the well screen is not damaged. The geotextile will then be draped over the
surface of the pea gravel
MZ/11-29-94/UST194-0201 nbr 5
