Clean fill material will then be used to fill the excavation around the riser pipe to grade, as
described in Section 2 8 The annular space around the vapor observation point will be sealed
below grade using hydrated bentonite, and the observation point will be protected at the
surface using a truck-rated traffic box.
2.3.5 Backfilling and Site Restoration
Following installation of the vapor observation point, the excavation will be backfilled and
ecompacted (Figure 3) The excavated area above the pea gravel will be lined with PVC
geomembrane to prevent influx of fine grained native soil into the excavation and to prevent
' leakage of vapor from the backfill material into the pea gravel
Clean backfill material will be tailgated into the excavation in six inch loose lifts The lifts
will be compacted using a mechanized compactor Water spraying will be performed as
necessary, in conjunction with the compaction, to obtain a minimum wet compaction of 90
percent Standard Proctor density Compaction is required to prevent settlement of the area
Compaction testing will be performed at the rate of approximately one per five lifts to verify
the required compaction is achieved Copies of the compaction test results will be provided
in the post-construction report.
The backfill will be compacted to a depth of approximately 6 inches below grade A second
PVC geomembrane will be set on top of the compacted fill and extended approximately one
foot beyond the excavation in all directions An asphalt cover will then be installed over the
' geomembrane to seal the surface
2.3.6 Sol! Disposal
Once the stockpiled soil has been characterized, a determination will be made regarding the
method of disposal I€ the analytical results are within acceptable levels, the impacted soil
will be transported to a soil recycling facility. Once the soil is recycled, the generator will
obtain a Certificate of Destruction from the recycling facility. If analytical results are above
acceptable levels, the impacted soil will be transported and disposed at an appropriate
disposal facility Soil that is not impacted may be used as backfill material at the facility or
be shipped to a recycling/disposal facility, at the discretion of Van Den Bergh Foods
MZ/1 1-29-94/UST/94-0201 nbr 6
