One Market Plaza
Spear Street Tower,Suite 717
San Francisco,CA 94105
(415)957-9557 GEOMATRIX
2 January 1991
rim
47
Y . .
Ms. Eleanor Ratliff JAN Q 8 4"
San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health
P.O. Box 2009 ENViRON(ViENTAL HPIALIJi
Stockton, California 95201 PERCViiT/SC cViurs
Subject: Soil Boring Program
2941 Navy Drive
Stockton, California
Dear Ms. Ratliff:
As requested by you in our telephone conversation this afternoon, we are submitting
additional information regarding the soil boring program planned at the ST Services
Stockton Terminal located at 2941 Navy Drive in Stockton. The purpose of the program is
to assess the distribution of diesel in soil near a valve that recently leaked at the site. Soil
borings will be drilled to intercept the groundwater table which is expected to be at 15 feet.
Spectrum Drilling is scheduled for one day of drilling. We anticipate that 5 to 6 borings to
15 feet can be drilled in a day. The borings will be drilled using a drill rig outfitted with
6.5" hollow stem augers. All downhole equipment(i.e. augers, rods, samplers) will be
steam-cleaned,pressure washed or washed in an Alconox-water solution before drilling
and sampling each boring.
The soil will be sampled continuously for lithologic description using a 5-foot-long split
spoon core barrel. Soil samples will be collected in plastic bags at approximate 2 foot
intervals for analysis by thin layer chromatography (TLC) in our Oakland laboratory.
Additional samples will be collected at the same intervals in clean,4-inch long brass tubes,
that will be sealed at the ends with aluminum foil and plastic endcaps. All samples will be
labeled and stored in an ice-cooled chest until delivery to our laboratory. The samples will
be stored in a refrigerator at our laboratory until they are analyzed by TLC or are sent under
Geomatrix chain-of-custody proceedures to a state-certified analytical laboratory. The
number of confirmation samples analyzed by a state-certified laboratory will be decided
once the TLC results are complete.
If water is encountered, the boreholes will be backfilled with hole-plug, a substance
consisting primarily of bentonite. If water is not encountered, the holes will be backfilled
with cement grout.
Drill cuttings will be stockpiled on site on plastic sheeting.
Three copies of the permit application form, three copies of a site map showing the
locations of the proposed borings, an authorization to release form and the permit
Geomatrix Consultants, Inc.
Consulting Engineers and Earth Scientists
