Five reactors
containing site soil and groundwater will be prepared, then allowed to mix in a closed container for
approximately 30 minutes. One of the reactors will be destructively sampled and analyzed for petroleum
hydrocarbons (per Task I ). This reactor is the "time 0" reactor. Two of the remaining reactors will be
sealed and mixed for the duration of the test. These reactors will serve as the controls . The final two
reactors will be sparged with ozone (approximately 30 ntg 03/L air) at a flow rate of 50 ml/min for up to
24 hours. Off-gases will be collected in Tedlar bags. Periodically, one control and one ozonated reactor
will be destructively sampled and the off-gases and aqueous phases will be analyzed for petroleum
hydrocarbons. Soil will not be analyzed due to the difficulty of sampling soil without losing significant
hydrocarbons to volatilization , Each test is summarized in the following Table.
Table - Tests to Evaluate Effect of Ozone on petroleum Hydrocarbon Removal
Test # Replicates Sparge Gas Est. Additionally, dissolved
chromium, the anion bromate, the ion bromite, elemental Inexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], ORP
measurements and pH analyses will be conducted .
Task 5 - Natural Attenuation of Cr(VI)—Optional
If Cr(VI) is formed by treatment with ozone, additional tests can be conducted to assess whether it can
naturally attenuate. Tests will simulate attenuation in the treatment zone as well as down gradient of the
treatment zone . Cr(VI) will be measured colorimetrically by PRIMA Environmental using a Hach DR
2800 Spectrophotonneter and appropriate test reagents. Testing will include treated soil and treated
groundwater from the high ozone dose test(s) in Task 3 . Two sets of tests will be conducted . The first set
will comprise four replicates containing groundwater water treated with ozone and site soils not treated
with ozone; these will represent conditions down gradient of the treatment zone. The second set will
consist of four replicates containing treated water and treater/ soil; these will represent conditions within
the treatment zone, once ozonation has ceased. Periodically, one replicate fron each set will be utilized
and the aqueous phase analyzed for Cr(VI).
Task 6 - Natural Attenuation of Bromate—optional
If bromate is formed during treatment with ozone, additional tests can be conducted to assess whether
bromate can naturally attenuate. Ozone treated soil and groundwater will be prepared by repeating the
Workplan for Feasibility studies — Former Stockton Taxi Company ATG Associates Inc.
S%.A28349\ WP for Pilot Tes iim mid SCM A"rC Project No. 54.28349.0001
11
