* v. Sampling Protocol -ow
BioLogic encourages proper sample collection, preservation and storage to ensure sample
integrity. Samples should be collected by experienced personnel according to established
guidelines and accompanied by a Chain-of-Custody record. The following information pro-
vides a brief description of the sampling protocol, although it is highly recommended that a
BioLogic project manager is contacted prior to sample collection to ensure appropriate pro-
cedures and volumes are attained:
1. Sample Collection
A minimum of 250 ml of water sample and 125 grams of soil sample are required for
physicochemical and microbial analyses. Larger sample volumes may be necessary depending
on the number of evaluations performed (i.e., additional physicochemistry).
Water samples are to be collected in clean 8 oz. (250 ml) glass containers that have been
washed with detergent, rinsed with tap water, and rinsed again with distilled deionized water.
Soil samples are to be collected in clean 8 oz. (250 g) glass containers or 2 '/2 inches diame-
ter brass sleeves, following the container cleaning instructions described for water sampling.
The brass sleeves, advanced in the field by hand-driving or motorized-driving by a drill rig,
are to be sealed with aluminum foil, plastic caps, and airtight tape.
All sample containers are to be marked with permanent, water-resistant ink on attached
labels and contain the following information:
0 Sample Date 0 ChenvProject Name
0 Sample ID Number 0 Sample Location/Depth
2. Sample Transportation
Sample Handling: All samples should be transported within 12-24 hours of collection via
overnight delivery. Samples are to be shipped cold, not frozen, with cold pack material (i.e.,
Blue Ice) not on ice. If there is a delay between collection and transport, samples may be
stored a maximum of 48 hours in a refrigerator. Samples do not require the addition of a pre-
servative. Samples are to be accompanied by a standard Chain-of-Custody following appro-
priate protocol. Prices listed do not include collection, transport, or delivery of samples
which will be required for laboratory analyses.
3. Sample Delivery
Samples may be delivered to the BioLogic laboratory from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday
through Friday. Special arrangements may be made with the Laboratory Director to accept
sample delivery during ofd hours, or on Saturday.
12
