Please submit by February 26, 1993 a work plan to
proceed with the investigation
Four underground storage tanks (UST's) were removed on January 30, 1987, a 6,000
gallon Ieaded gasoline tank, a 5,000 gallon unleaded gasoline tank, a 2,000 gallon
unleaded tank and a 550 gallon waste oil tank. Two septic tanks were also identified on
the property. Eight soil samples were collected from beneath the UST's; however, only
four samples underwent laboratory analysis. Soil samples collected at 14 feet beneath
the 2,000 gallon and the 5,000 gallon unleaded gasoline tanks detected significant soil
contamination. Concentrations of contaminants up to 5,300 ppm TPH-gasoline and 19
ppm benzene were detected. Subsequently, the tank pits were backfilled with soil
excavated during the tank removal. Tank removal records do not indicate that the tank
piping was removed or sampled.
On March 19, 1987, three monitoring wells (TD 52') were installed to investigat
possible groundwater contamination. Soil samples collected during the installation of
monitoring well, MW1 at 26 and at 36 feet below ground surface (bgs) detected soil
contamination. However, the detection limits used for analysis were higher than that
which is currently accepted. Water samples collected from monitoring wells, MW1,
MW2, and MW3, detected petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Groundwater was
first encountered at approximately 40 feet bgs.
A Division of San Joaquin County Hcalth rafc Services 10
