17 July 2002
. AGE-NC Project No. 97-0327
' covered by plastic sheeting at the site; soil boring/monitoring well locations are depicted in Figure
2.
2.2. SOIL SAMPLING
' Discrete soil samples were collected at 5 foot intervals beginning at 15 feet bsg to total depth of each
boring. Soil samples were collected from P-10, P-11 and MW-4 utilizing a California split-spoon
sampler loaded with 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves;the sampler was driven by dropping a 140-pound
' weight from a height of 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive each 6-inch length of the
sampler (blow counts) was recorded on boring logs by an AGE staff geologist; boring logs are in
Appendix A.
'
Soil samples were collected from P-12 using a Geoprobe soil sampling assembly and"direct push"
technology; each soil sampling assembly was loaded with four pre-cleaned 1.125-inch by 6-inch
' brass sleeves.
Soil samples from both the split-spoon sampler and Geoprobe soil sampling assembly were
lie
preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, then capping and
sealing the ends with tape. Each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with soil boring designation,
' depth, time, date and sampler's initials.
Each preserved soil sample was logged on a chain-of-custody form, placed in a chilled container and
' transported to a California Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory; selected
samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d,
respectively) by EPA Method 8015M;
• Benzene,toluene, ethylbenzene,xylene.(BTEX) and methyl-tertiary butyl ether {MTBE) by
' EPA Method 8020; and
Methanol, ethanol, ethylene dibromide (EDB), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), tertiary
' butanol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DTPE), ethyl tert butyl ether (ETBE), tert amyl methyl
ether(TAME), and confirmation of MTBE by EPA Method 8260 Modified.
One soil sample (P11-40) was submitted to Bid et Laboratory_for m- icrabial-enumeration and
physicochemical analysis to determine feasibility of bioremediation at the site. Two soil samples
' (P11-35 and P11-55) were submitted to Cooper Testing Laboratory for geotechnical testing of
permeability, porosity, total organic content, bulk density and moisture by ASTM Methods D5084
and D2974
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
,1
