The soil samples were submitted under <br /> chain-of-custody protocol for analyses in accordance with the following approved analytical <br /> program: <br /> • Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg); benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, <br /> and total xylenes (BTEX), and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) with U.S. <br /> Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 826013, and <br /> • Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) and total petroleum hydrocarbons <br /> as motor oil (TPHmo)with EPA Method 8015M. <br /> Analytical results and PID readings for soil samples collected during this investigation are <br /> included in Table 1. Copies of the laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-custody forms <br /> are provided in Attachment 2. The field investigation was conducted in accordance with the <br /> soil boring permit requirements and SECOR's approved work plan. <br /> Auger cuttings and limited decon-fluids were containerized in a Department of <br /> Transportation (DOT)-rated drum and retained onsite pending the results of soil analyses. <br /> RESULTS <br /> Soil Profile <br /> The soils encountered in all four borings were similar. The top 8 inches consisted of <br /> aggregate base/gravel that was underlain by a silt horizon (silt, slit with clay, and clayey silt) <br /> to a depth of approximately 38 to 40 inches. The silt horizon was underlain by clay that <br /> extends to the top of a hard pan at 42 to 44 inches bgs. The hard pan was encountered in <br /> all of the borings and the shallow step out boring SB-1 B. No discoloration of the soils or <br /> hydrocarbon odors were apparent in the soils encountered. No elevated PID readings were <br /> measured when the soils were field screened with a direct reading instrument (Table 1). <br /> Soil Analytical Results <br /> Analytical results and PID readings are included in Table 1. TPHd and TPHmo were <br /> detected in all four soil samples at concentrations that range from 11 to 33 milligrams per <br /> kilogram (mg/kg) and 50 to 110 mg/kg, respectively. The maximum concentrations of TPHd <br /> and TPHmo were both measured in soil sample SB-1/SB-1@2'. TPHg, BTEX, and MTBE <br /> were not detected at concentrations equal to or greater than method reporting limits in any <br /> of the soil samples. The laboratory report narrative indicated that the TPHd detected did <br /> not display a typical diesel chromatogram. The narrative stated..."Hydrocarbons reported <br /> as TPH as diesel do not exhibit a typical chromatographic pattern...(for all samples). <br /> These hydrocarbons are higher boiling than typical diesel fuel." SECOR contacted Kiff <br /> Analytical for further clarification. Kiff indicated the higher boiling points were more typical <br /> of asphalt than diesel hydrocarbons. Copies of the chromatograms for all four samples, the <br /> diesel standard, and the asphalt standard are included in the laboratory report. <br /> IAPG&E\report\Final Phase 11 report.doc <br />
