McClelland consultants T"
February 15, 1989
Project No, 09-01-1308
Ogden Environmental Services
10955 John Jay Hopkins Drive
San Diego, CA 92121
Attention: William S. Rickman
Verification Sampling Results
Former Tillie Lewis Site Remediation
Stockton, California
This letter summarizes the verification sampling, at the Former Tillie Lewis
Foods Cannery. Prior to verification sampling, the excavation was taken down a
depth of about 28 to 30 feet. Locally beneath the north end of the fuel tank,
the contamination extended deeper and the excavation was carried to about 35 to
38-foot depth. The lateral extent and bottom depth of the excavation were
determined using a HNu, Photo Ionization Detector. Materials from areas where
the HNu readings were 1 ppm or higher, were removed and hauled to the contami-
nated soil stockpile. Based on the February 7, 1989 survey of the contaminated
soil stockpile, together with the volumes of soil treated to that date, the total
volume of contaminated soils was about 7500 to 8000 cubic yards.
The verification sampling plan is shown in Plate 1. Verification samples
were obtained at 30-foot spacing in accordance with the site assessment plan,
which previously was approved by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality
Control Board and the San Joaquin Local Health District in March, 1988. Verifi-
cation soil samples were obtained on Wednesday, February 8, 1989 in the presence
of Gordon Boggs, of the Central Valley RWQCB, and Diane Hinson, of the San
Joaquin Local Health District, who indicated their concurrence with sampling
protocol.
The samples were refrigerated and transported to Canonie Laboratory in
Stockton, California that afternoon, using approved chain-of-custody procedures.
The samples were analyzed fors 1) total petroleum hydrocarbons using a fuel
fingerprint, using a EPA 3550 extraction and a "guidelines for addressing fuel
leaks" analyses) , and 2) total volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (TVPH) using a EPA
5030 extraction and EPA 8015 analyses. These analyses were chosen by Mr. Gordon
Boggs. The samples were analyzed using approved QA/QC protocol, with blanks and
spikes.
Results of the chemical analysis are provided on Plate 2. A copy of the
laboratory report including complete GC scans and QA/QC reports are appended.
McClelland Corlsuilanls JYMM),Inc.
2140 Eastman Avenuo,Venture.Coliforms 9300:1
(tlW1UF-bb'sb, hAX ItlUbltl92-4/91
A memyer 011"e Fugro-McClelland group of companies
