(Clearwater) for
the above referenced site and has the following comments.
The report details the January 11 , 1999 installation of three additional monitoring wells
(MW-4, MW-5 and MW-6) , the development and sampling of those wells on January 20,
1999 , and the sampling of existing wells MW- 1 , MW-2 and MW-3 on March 23 , 1999.
Drilling of the three new monitoring wells was done by 8" hollow stem auger, but the
continuous core barrel from which soil samples were collected was not plastic lined as
stated in the report (page 2, section 2. 1 , paragraph two) . Samples selected for analysis
were hand packed from the open core barrels into 6" brass tubes by the Clearwater
representative on site. Analytical results from these samples evidenced minor soil
contamination , mostly at the 19 feet below surface grade (bsg) level . These results are
consistent with prior soil analytical results , when hits of soil contamination were reported
from between 16-26 feet bsg,
Analytical results from the groundwater sampling events indicate that significant
contaminant impact to groundwater has occurred and that the lateral limits of this
contaminant plume have not been defined , except possibly to the northwest of the
former tank pit area .
The report recommends that further site characterization be made with a series of direct
push borings. PHS/EHD agrees that further investigation should be done to define the
extent of the groundwater contaminant plume, and recommends the use of geoprobe
continuous core work or cone penetrometer testing (CPT) .
The report also recommends that analysis for fuel oxygenates be discontinued . In
correspondence dated August 20, 1998 PHS/EHD requested that a confirmation
analysis for fuel oxygenates be performed using EPA Method 8260 , not by EPA Method
8240 . This analysis has yet to be done. When a confirmation round of analysis is
performed utilizing EPA Method 8260 , the need to continue testing for fuel oxygenates
can be reevaluated.
A Division of San foaquin Countv Health Care Service=
