i
PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY r.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION ": • n `<
Karen Furst, M.D. , M.P.H . , Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202 COP
209/468-3420
FLOYD BARNES AUG 2 ® 1998
9744 FOUNTAIN VALLEY
STOCKTON CA 95209
RE : Barnes Trucking Site Code : 2506
1817 Fresno Avenue
Stockton , CA 95206
San Joaquin County Public Health Services , Environmental Health Division
( PHS/EHD ) has reviewed the "Groundwater Monitoring Report, Second Quarter
1998" which was prepared for the above reverenced site by Clearwater Group ,
Inc . , and has the following comments for your review and action .
Groundwater samples were collected on March 13 , 1998 and analyzed for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gas (TPHg) ; TPH as diesel (TPHd) ; Benzene ,
Toluene , Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) ; and five fuel oxygenates. Results of
these analyses continued to evidence significant impact to groundwater, with the
highest levels showing in MW- 1 , which is directly downgradient of the former
tank pit. Results show 230 parts per billion (ppb) Benzene and 280 ppb
Toluene . Both of these results exceed the maximum contaminant level ( MCL)
for these constituents in public drinking water as established by the California
State Department of Health Services . Results also show 9200 ppb of TPHg in
the same well .
Groundwater levels at the site rose approximately five feet in the interval
between the collection of the first round of groundwater monitoring samples
(9/29/97) and the current round (5/13/98) . Rising water levels of this magnitude
tend to dilute the water samples , as is indicated by the dramatic change in
results noted between the two samples .
PHS/EHD agrees at this time that vertical definition in soil appears to have been
made . Lateral definition in the down gradient direction remains unknown .
Please proceed with the recommendations of Clearwater Group , Inc.
(Subsurface Investigation Report, Nov. 20 , 1997) and prepare a workplan for the
advancement of two soil borings in the down-gradient direction , to be completed
as monitoring wells . Please submit the workplan to PHS/EHD by Oct. 5 , 1998 .
A Division oFSan Joaquin County Health Care Services
