The depth to ground water at this site is about 8 feet. When
ground water is this close to the surface, the likelihood of soil
contamination, at even low levels, impacting the ground water is high and
cleanup as required. A ground water sample collected from the pit during
removal of the underground tank was contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons
310 ppm Total Hydrocarbons. A soil sample collected from boring SB-1 at a
depth of 4.5 feet, about 30 feet from the former tank, contained 30 ppb
toluene. Both the contamination of soil , close to the water table, and the
ground water in the pit, indicates additional ground water contamination.
Three wells were installed, but none downgradient of the former tank. Even
though no ground water contamination was found in the wells, a downgradient
well was necessary and a fourth well was installed. Two water samples were
collected from the new well and both contained non-detectable levels of
contamination. The County has requested additional work, including one more
round of sampling from the new well , measurement of the ground water
elevations in all four wells to confirm the gradient, and an explanation of
the soil contamination in the boring. Once this work has been completed and
County staff have reviewed the results, a determination on additional
monitoring, soil remediation, and/or closure may be made.
If you have any questions, please call me at (916) 361-5726.

ELIZA H A.
