INVESTIGATION
Source of Contamination
As a results of an initial investigation (Alt & Watzi.g File
N0229 ) where soil sample collection indicated that contamination
T existed near an underground storage tank 3-nstallation, a
- subsurface investigation to delineate the cause and potential
source of the contamination was initiated. The source of the
' - contamination was uncertain as daily logs maintained by the
facility operators indicated no significant errors in inventory
of any of the tanks.
Additional calculations with the maintenance records
indicated the potential for a small (approximately 0 . 9 gal/day)
leak in the unleaded gasoline tank (see appendix) . According to
' - the graph a value of one (I) must be maintained over time to
' indicate no leak, fluctuations generally in less than direction
indicate loss of product, greater than one (1) indicate gain of
water. The magnitude of this leak is small enough to be readily
missed in the daily maintenance program. However the source of
' - contamination therefore remains unidentified. It is currently
therefore unknown exactly what is the source of the contamination
at the facility.
Conversations with the facility personnel regarding the
Potential source of contamination, since it was believed that the
present tanks were not potential sources, indicated that many
' years previously, another UST for gasoline story
_ ge had been
located in approximately the same region. No information remains
' on it's location
condition or removal.
Page 34
' 71
