Holding Times -Holding Times is defined as the maximum permissible elapsed time, in
days or hours for the sampling date to its extraction and/or analysis. Holding times vary
by analytes or groups of analytes. The holding time for extraction is often different for
water and soil samples for the same analytical method. Samples are qualified when
specific holding times are exceeded(EPA functional guidelines). Sample results are
qualified as estimates and are flagged with"J" for positive results and"UJ" for non-
detected results indicating it is difficult to determine the direction of bias.
Blanks -Blanks are used to determine the existence and the amount of contamination
problems introduced by the laboratory and field procedures, method and trip/equipment
blanks, respectively. Positive results should not be reported for common laboratory
contaminates unless the concentration in the blank exceeded the concentration 5 to 10
times the Method Detection Limit(MDL).
3
