MONITORING AND REPORTING
S. M. S. BRINERS, INC.
SURFACE IMPOUNDMENT CLOSURE
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
INFORMATION SHEET
S. M. S. Briners operates a vegetable pickling facility about ten miles east of
Stockton. Brines are currently discharged to two evaporation ponds. These ponds
were lined with flexible membrane liners. The liners were constructed in 1975
and did not meet the strict construction standards which have been in effect
since 1984. The ponds leaked brine wastes to ground water. A plume of ground
water with elevated salts originates at the ponds. Flow of the plume is largely
influenced by nearby production wells. S. M. S. Briners decided to replace the
pond disposal system with a deep injection well . The well is regulated by the
federal Environmental Protection Agency.
Surface water runoff has degraded water quality in Littlejohns Creek adjacent to
the facility. Littlejohns Creek is tributary to the San Joaquin River. S. M.
S. Briners has implemented a program to eliminate the discharge of brines and
spilled brines to surface waters.
These waste discharge requirements regulate the closure of the evaporation ponds,
ground water remediation and the prevention of discharges to surface water.
