Mr. Howard Hold
August 16,2004
Page 3
Monitoring Well Construction
The final monitoring well designs will be based on the geophysical logs obtained in the field,
lithologic evaluation, and correlation of the geologic data at the new sites with existing
geologic data. The MW5A and MW6A wells will have total depths of approximately 140
feet. Well MW613 will be completed to a depth of approximately 240 feet. The boreholes for
the shallow zone completions will be 12-1/4 inches in diameter with 6-inch diameter Class
200 PVC casing and screen. The borehole for the deep zone completion(MW613)will be 14
inches in diameter with 6-inch diameter Class 200 PVC casing and screen. Each wellhead
will be secured with a locking mechanism to prevent vandalism. Example well profiles are
shown in Figures 2 and 3.
Monitoring well development will be performed by bailing and pumping. Final development
will occur with submersible pumping equipment.
Cuttings and fluids from the drilling program will be spread on the ground adjacent to each
well location. Fluids generated from development activities will be discharged away from
the monitoring well site at a location that will not impact site operations or(as applicable)
nearby agricultural operations.
Baseline Sampling
Following well construction and development, dedicated pumping equipment will be
installed in each well for ongoing evaluation and/or corrective action monitoring.
Specifically, a dedicated submersible pump will be installed, this pumping equipment will
also be used to collect the baseline samples. The initial samples will be analyzed for
constituents in accordance with the requirements shown in Table I of the Kruger Foods—
SMS Briners tentative revised Monitoring and Reporting Program (July 15,2004). Sampling
will be conducted in accordance with standardized procedures,as discussed below.
Purging and Sampling
During purging, indicator parameters will be measured, including specific conductance (EC),
pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, and redox. Indicator readings will be recorded
on a field data sheet. Static and pumping water level measurements, pumping rate,
measurement time, and all field parameters will also be recorded.
Purging will include removal of at least three casing volumes. Field parameters will be
checked to ensure water quality has stabilized. Upon achieving stabilization of indicator
parameters, ground-water samples will be collected for analysis.
Sample Handling and Ground-Water Chemical Anal
As is routinely performed for the ongoing monitoring program, a state-certified laboratory
will perform the analyses and the usual chain of custody procedures for sample handling will
