NVA001 -./
The test well will be constructed with 8-inch diameter casing to a depth of approximately 180
feet with approximately 20 feet of screen and a 15-foot sump. Other design features of the
well will include a 100-foot annular seal. The final design of the test well will be based on
conditions encountered in the field.
The borehole for the well will be completed using the mud rotary drilling method. Cuttings
generated during drilling will be described and logged under the supervision of a professional
geologist. Cuttings generated during drilling will be spread on Kruger Foods and SMS
Briners property. Fluids will be contained and will be allowed to evaporate with the residual
solids mixed with the cuttings.
The well will be developed by simultaneous airlift pumping and swabbing. Airlift
development operations will be performed with a check valve to preclude the introduction of
air into the gravel pack. Any fines developed will be removed with a bailer. The wellhead
will be completed with a concrete pad installed to protect the wellhead and to control surface
drainage. Following development, the well will be surveyed to accurately locate the well and
to determine wellhead reference elevations.
Baseline sampling of EW 1 will be conducted following well development to establish
baseline groundwater quality conditions. Groundwater samples will be analyzed for
constituents listed on Table I of the Groundwater Monitoring Program of the Monitoring and
Reporting Program No. R5-2004-0157. In addition, 1,2-dibromocloropropane(DBCP)will
also be added to the list of constituents to be analyzed. Prior to sampling the well, purging
will be conducted and electrical conductivity, turbidity, temperature, and pH will be
monitored.
5.4 Shallow Zone Aquifer Characteristics
An aquifer test in the shallow zone has not been performed at the SMS Briners facility to
date and current estimates for transmissivity in the shallow zone were derived from estimates
of specific capacity at MW3A. As a result of implementing an expansion of the existing
groundwater remediation system, a more accurate determination of shallow zone aquifer
characteristics is needed to refine the capture zone analysis and to ensure that remediation of
salt-impacted groundwater is optimized.
A constant rate aquifer test of the shallow zone is planned for a pumping duration ranging
from 12 to 24 hours. The pumped well, EWl, will have a constant discharge rate determined
via a pre-test but would likely range between 20 to 30 gallons per minute(gpm). The
r duration of the test will in part be determined based on evaluation of the data as the test is
being conducted. Recovery data will also be recorded following the test for a two-hour or
longer period. Drawdown and recovery measurements (along with discharge data)will be
collected from the pumped well using electronic pressure transducers along with
measurements of water levels from adjacent shallow and deep monitoring wells, with
particular attention to monitoring wells MW 1 and MW3A.
