- Clayton_
I\LIK(K EtiTAI
SLI L1 -\TS
1.0 INTRODUCTION
_. Clayton Environmental Consultants, Inc., was retained by Orchard Supply
Hardware (OSH) to install three monitoring wells to sample and analyze soil and
groundwater at the northeast corner of MacArthur Drive and Grant Line Road in
Tracy, California (Figure 1).
This work was authorized by Mr. Mike LaTourette, director of real estate for
OSH, on February 26, 1990, by approving Clayton's Proposal No. 90-B-011 and its
-- accompanying terms and conditions. Clayton commenced field work on March
28, 1990, after obtaining the permits to install the monitoring wells from San
Joaquin County Public Health Services (SJCPHS).
2.0 BACKGROUND
Clayton was contracted by OSH in January 1990 to conduct a Phase I
environmental assessment of the subject site. The assessment revealed that a
gasoline underground storage tank(UST) was removed in 1986. Kaprealian
_ Engineering, Inc. (KEI)had been retained by the owner, Mr. Jim Joseph, to install
a groundwater monitoring well. The well was installed to a depth of 25 feet. A
water sample fror.-i the well was analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)
as gasoline and the volatile hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and
xylene (BTEX). All of these constituents were below detectable limits. Clayton
' could not find the well during the assessment. We were later informed that it had
W been abandoned. Appendix A contains a copy of KEI's report.
Clayton conducted this investigation to establish a baseline environmental
condition of the property prior to its transfer from Mr. Joseph to OSH. The welis
were located near three cor en of the property, as shown in Figure 2.
3.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION
Clayton commenced field activities for the installation and sampling of the three
" monitoring wells at the site on March 28, 1990. All work was performed in
accordance with Clayton's Drilling Well Construction, and Sampling Protocols,
included in Appendix B. The following subsections descnbe the completion of
- each of the tasks outlined in Clayton's work proposal dated February 20, 1990.
3.1 SOIL BOREHOLE INSTALLATION/MONITORING WELL
CONSTRUCTION
Before.drilling began, a well.construction_application and work plan were filed
A with San Joaquin. County Public Health Services,Environmental Health Division.
A copy of this application is included in Appendix C. Drilling at the subject site
' was conducted on March 28, 1990. DATUM Exploration, Inc. was contracted to
install the shallow groundwater wells under the direct supervision of Clayton
personnel. The boreholes were installed using an 8-inch hollow stem auger from a
mobile truck-mounted drilling rig.
-1-
