Clayton
CO`4tTfANT
S
Because of the shallow groundwater at the site, the regulatory levels established in the
LUFr Manual did not apply. Before Clayton commenced excavation, we submitted a
work plan for excavation and aeration of the gasoline-contaminated soil to the
SJC/EHD on June 12, 1990 This plan was approved by Ms. Diane Hanson of the
_ SJC/EHD
Clayton completed excavation and onsite aeration of approximately 1,650 cubic yards
of soil as documented in our report, Soil Excavation and Aeranon for Interland
Corporation, dated October 19, 1990. On October 29, 1990, Clayton sent an
Addendum to Sod Excavation and Aeration Report Dated October 19, 1990 These
reports were sent to the appropriate regulatory agencies and are summarized in the
w following subsections. ;
i
Y 4.1 EXCAVATION AND SAMPLING
Soil excavation started on July 23, 1990, near the gasoline island concrete pad, which
_W was still in place. Fuel Oil Polishing Company excavated the soil using a Case
excavator, a 12-yard dump truck, and a Case 450 truck loader. Clayton monitored r
excavated soils with an organic vapor meter (OVM)
i
4.1.1 Initial bicatvadan
F j
} Clayton mcratored excavation to approximately 10.5 feet The sod at 10 5 feet
appeared to be free of contamination based on visual observations and readings from t
,..., the OVM. At 10 5 feet the water table was visible in some spots, although it was not
continuous.
t` Initially, approximately 1,000 cubic yards of soil were excavated. We collected seven
soil samples from the base of the walls of the excavation and one water sample on the
fullowing dates:
e July,23.1990. SW-1 and SE-1
o MW-1, NW-1, MN-1, NE-1, ME-1, and H.0-1
- The soil samples were atia►wzed by the following methods:
a EPA Method 5030!8015-5020, for gasoline and BTEX
• EPA Method 418.1, for total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons as oil and grease
Y
The water sample was analyzed by EPA Method 418.1 only.
Figure 3 prcnides a sample location diagram. Table 4 is a summary of the analytical
- results. Notable results are listed below
f
'i; • Concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons from the southern and western sides of
L: the excavation (SW-1, SE-1, MW-1, and NW-1) were below the remedial objectives.
• Concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons from the northern and eastern walls of
the excavation were above the remedial objectives.
5
»tom
