PHS/EHD has the following comments for
your consideration.
PHS/EHD observed significant surface drainage into the traffic boxes of monitoring wells, MW-8, MW-9,
and MW-10. These traffic boxes are below grade and hence subject to surface drainage. Organic liquid
collects in the traffic boxes. Furthermore, evidence is present which suggests that drainage has occurred
into the casing of MW-8. Frequent replacement of the expandable water tight locldng caps will be
necessary to insure that wells are not subject to surface contamination. Immediately replace the traffic box
gaskets, to decrease surface drainage into traffic boxes,by July 24, 1992. Also, consider the replacement
of MW-8, MW-9, and MW-10 traffic boxes to prevent surface drainage.
Prior to the sampling of monitoring wells,pH,electrical conductivity, and temperature parameters were
not measured to verify groundwater stabilization. The "Leaking Underground Fuel Tank" (LUFT) manual
prepared by the California State Water Resources Control Board states that purging of monitoring wells
should continue, prior to sampling, until pH,electrical conductivity and temperature parameters have
stabilized. Furthermore the "LUFT" manual recognizes that the amount purged will usually exceed four
well volumes. Please be prepared to measure pH, conductivity and temperature parameters during
monitoring well purging prior to any future monitoring well sampling.
If you have any questions, please contact Mary Meays, RENS,of my staff at (209) 468-0337.
Jogi Khanna, ., M.P.H.
Health O
7
rie to a, S, Program anage
nvironmental Health Division
LAC/MM:ib
c: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
c: Al Ellis, Rishwain, Hakeem and Ellis
c: Sven Edlund, Harding Lawson Associates
c: Scott Thompson, Alton Geoscience
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Heakh Care Services 10
