1704 West Hammer Lane
Page 2
For your information, PHS/EHD has directed ARCO to complete the definition of the extent of
petroleum hydrocarbon groundwater contamination related to the operation of underground
storage tanks. Based on the most recent groundwater sampling results Fourth Quarter 1996,
the locations of proposed monitoring wells, as described in the "Authorization to Install Three
Monitoring Wells" dated November 28, 1995 and January 31, 1996, submitted on behalf of
ARCO, should provide sufficient information to define the hydrocarbon plume. ARCO has
begun analyzing groundwater samples for methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) which is much
more mobile than petroleum hydrocarbons and up to 2,400 ppb was detected in the sample
collected from vapor extraction well, VW3, which is located in the southern area of the station
property. Additional monitoring wells may be necessary to define the extent of MTBE
contamination. For your information, PHS/EHD has enclosed a site map and a table
summarizing the Fourth Quarter 1996 groundwater sample results.
In order for ARCO to investigate the contamination associated with the underground storage
tanks located at 1612 Hammer Lane, it will be necessary to obtain access to the Parkwoods
Shopping Center. Should ARCO be unable to access your property, Sims-Grupe as the
property owner will assume responsibility for any remaining contamination of Parkwoods
property. PHS/EHD suggests that you work in cooperation with ARCO.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss the site further, please contact Mary Meays at
(209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division

Mary Meays, Senior REHS Margaro, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
MM/1704HAM/MS
enclosures:
EMCON and Harza work plan site maps, ARCO #548 site map, and sample results
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
Paul Supple, ARCO
Jay Johnson, EMCON
LOP file
