The Report discusses the five grab groundwater samples collected
from two borings around Trenches 3 and 4 to delineate the vertical extent of petroleum pollution.
BoringB-64 was terminated at 140 feet below ground surface s and boring B-
gr (bgs), g 65 was terminated at
130 feet bgs. The deepest groundwater sampled collected from boring B-65 was at 96 feet bgs because
there was no groundwater at 130 feet bgs. Each of the borings had detections of total petroleum
hydrocarbons as crude and diesel in the deepest collected grab groundwater samples, and B-64 had
detections of benzene in each of the three grab groundwater samples collected from the boring. The
Work Plan proposes an additional boring using the mud rotary drilling technique to delineate the vertical
extent of petroleum pollution. The proposed boring will extend beyond 140 feet bgs,but Shell will
determine the total depth of the boring in the field based on visual, olfactory, and organic vapor
monitoring evidence of petroleum hydrocarbons.
Regional Board staff concurs with the Work Plan provided that the investigative derived wastes are
removed as quickly as possible. By 26 March 2004, please submit an investigation report detailing field
activities, sampling results, and waste disposal along with recommendations for remediation of
contaminated soil and groundwater.
