Box 2463
Houston,TX 77252
REVIEW OF REPORTS, FORMER SHELL CRUDE OIL PIPELINES—HANSEN ROAD,
TRACY,SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
We have reviewed the 22 July 2003 Additional Delineation Report(Report) and the 27 August 2003
Workplan for Additional Groundwater Delineation (Work Plan) submitted by Clayton Group Services,
Inc. on behalf of Shell Oil Products Company(Shell) for the former Shell Central Valley Crude Oil
Pipeline near the intersection of Hansen and Schulte Roads in Tracy. The Report discusses the grab
groundwater samples collected from three borings around Trenches 3 and 4 to delineate the vertical
extent of petroleum pollution. Boring B-61 was terminated at 132 feet below ground surface(bgs),
boring B-62 was terminated at 80 feet bgs, and boring B-63 was terminated at 146 feet bgs. Each of
the borings had detections of total petroleum hydrocarbons as crude and diesel in the grab groundwater
samples collected at the total depth.
The Work Plan proposes three additional borings near former Trenches 3 and 4 to collect grab
groundwater samples using a conepenetrometer(CPT) drilling rig to delineate the vertical extent of
petroleum pollution. Shell will advance the first boring to a maximum depth of 200 feet below ground
surface to identify potential water bearing zones with no samples collected. The Work Plan proposes
grab groundwater samples in two of the borings from the intervals identified by the first CPT boring.
Regional Board staff concurs with the Work Plan. By 5 December 2003, please submit an
investigation report detailing field activities, sampling results, and waste disposal along with
recommendations for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater.
