' 0 Winston#183
Stockton,CA
' August 8,2002
9.0 PHASE II LIMITED SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION
' The objective of the limited subsurface investigation activities was to evaluate the potential for a release from
the hydraulic lifts and the OWS byassessing the presence of potentially impacted soils in the vicinity of the
five(5)hydraulic lifts located within and the OWS outside the Winston Tire Store building(Figure 2).
' 9.1 BACKGROUND
Based on criteria presented in the Goodyear Combined Phase I and Phase HEnvironmental Site Assessment
' Specification and as amended through discussions between Goodyear and SECOR,hydraulic lifts,oil/water
separators,USTs(current and former),and areas of significant surface staining were to be investigated. The
Site consists of five (5) hydraulic lifts and an OWS, therefore four (4) soil borings were proposed for the
' limited subsurface investigation.
9.2 SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION
tSECOR completed the following scope of work as part of the limited investigation:
Completed three (3) soil borings (183HL-1, 183HL-2, 183HL-3) to a depth of 12 feet bgs at the
' locations indicated on Figure 2;
Completed one (1) soil boring(183OWS-1) to a depth of 12 feet bgs at the location indicated on
' Figure 2;
• Collected continuous soil samples for soil classification and field-screening for the presence of organic
' vapors and identification of water bearing zones; and
• Collected four(4)soil samples for laboratory analysis.
' 9.3 METHODS OF INVESTIGATION
Evaluation of the potential subsurface contamination was conducted through the advancement of three(3)
' GeoProbe borings adjacent to the five(5)hydraulic lifts, and one(1)GeoProbe boring adjacent to the OWS
(Figure 2).
' 9.3.1 Soil Sampling/GeoProbe Advancement Procedures
A direct push GeoProbe sampler was utilized to collect continuous soil samples for field
classification,field-screening for the presence of organic vapors, and identification of water bearing
' zones. Soil cores were obtained by driving a 48-inch by 1.5-inch diameter lined sampler to the
desired sampling depth. Continuous soil samples were retrieved from the land surface to the boring
terminus. Upon retrieval, soil samples were split for laboratory analysis and field screening'field
' classification of soil type.
9.3.2 Field Screening Procedures
Continuous soil samples were collected and field screened for the presence of total organic vapors
' with a photo-ionization detector(PID)equipped with an 10.2 electron volt(eV)lamp source. The
PID was calibrated per the manufacturer's instructions prior to use. A portion of each soil sample
was placed in a resealable plastic bag, shaken to breakup cohesive soils and allowed to sit in a warm
' location for a minimum of ten minutes prior to screening Following headspace development, the
PID sampling probe was inserted through a small opening in the sample bag and the highest meter
response was recorded on the geologic boring log.
1
' 0024 gy store 183 phase 2 reviewed 1 SECOR international incorporated
12
