Barbonio
Chevron Chemical Company LLC
P. O. Box 6047
San Ramon, CA 94583-0947
UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS, KOPPEL STOCKTON, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I spoke with Mr. Michael Infuma of San Joaquin County Public Health Services on 4 February 2000
concerning a request for closure on the removal of two diesel fuel tanks that apparently were removed in
1989 between the former bagging plant and monitoring well KP-3. We agreed that the Regional Board
will act as lead agency on the closure, since we are already working with you on the nitrate and
ammonium constituents at the site.
As I understand the history, diesel contaminants were found at 65 mg/kg in the headspace.of a soil
sample obtained in 1989. Mr. hifuma wrote letters requesting further analyses in 1990, 1992 and 1993,
all of which went unanswered. He suggested that since monitoring well KP-3 is the nearest
downdradient well from the former tank site that this well could serve as the indicator of residual
petroleum contamination.
Please obtain a groundwater sample from KP-3 and all on-site water supply wells. Analyze them for
total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel using EPA method 8015M, and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene
and xylene (BTEX) using EPA method 8020, and gasoline oxygenates using EPA method 8260. Note
that some laboratories are able to analyze the above suite of petroleum hydrocarbons with EPA Method
8260, which is also acceptable.
California Environmental Protection Agency
j Recycled Paper
