I
10 INTRODUCTION
On behalf of the San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery, Ramage Environmental has prepared this
Work Plan for regulatory review and approval The proposed scope of work includes the
installation of two groundwater monitoring wells and quarterly groundwater monitoring and
sampling at the site The work scope has been approved by the San Joaquin County Public
Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHSIEHD) and the Underground Storage Tank
Cleanup Fund (USTCF)
1 1 Site and Subsurface Description
The subject property is an operating cemetery located on the northeast corner of Harding Way
and Cemetery Lane in the city of Stockton (San Joaquin County), California (Figure 1) The
project site is located on the east-side of the mausoleum building (Figure 2)
The site is flat and at an elevation of approximately 16 feet above mean sea level Based on
previous drilling at the site, the subsurface soil consists of interbedded clay, silt and sand
mixtures to a depth of at least 80 feet bgs Sand intervals encountered during sampling were
less than 5 feet thick, laterally discontinuous and consisted primarily of poorly-graded fine-to
medium-grained sand
Groundwater was last monitored in February 1998 at a depth of approximately 45 feet below
ground surface (bgs) Since 1992, groundwater levels have risen approximately 22 feet In
general, groundwater flows north-northeast at a gradient of approximately 0 002 foot/foot
12 Previous Work
On November 17, 1989, one 500-gallon gasoline UST and one 1,000-gallon gasoline UST were
removed from the site in response to a failed tank tightness test A hole approximately 5-inches
in diameter and numerous pin-sized holes were observed in the tank bottom Soil directly
beneath the removed tanks was saturated with gasoline hydrocarbons
On January 30, 1991, WaterWork Corp published Problem Assessment Report for Investigation
of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contamination Their scope of work incl lded the drilling of five soil
borings and the installation of one groundwater monitoring well (MW\;)in the center of the
former UST excavation Results of the soil and groundwater sampling indicated that
groundwater had been impacted by gasoline hydrocarbons but that the majority of the
• hydrocarbon mass was concentrated in soil between 10 and 20 feet bgs
2
