A cone penetrating testing boring CPT-1 was advanced near the former
underground storage tank (LJST) to a depth of 100 feet below surface grade (bsg) in July
2003. Soil and grab groundwater samples were collected from boring CPT-1a adjacent to
CPT-1. Four monitoring wells MW-4,MW-5,MW-6, MW-7, and one soil boring SB-8 were
subsequently installed on site and off site in December 2003. Depth to groundwater in 2003
and early 2004 was approximately 45 feet below surface grade (bsg). Groundwater flow
direction has been generally northeast since 2001.
Soil Investigation Results
Analytical results of the northwest off-site MW5 soil sample at 30.5 feet bsg were 1,200
milligrams per kilograms (mg/kg) of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline (IPH-g),
and at 40.5 feet bsg were 590 mg/kg. Results of the northeast off-site MW7 soil sample at
45 feet bsg were non-detect in all analytes except 0.10 mg/kg of 1,2-dichoroethane (1,2-
DCA). 1,2-DCA was not detected in any other soil samples. In a previous investigation in
April 2000, on-site soil boring SB7 (near the former UST) soil samples at 60.5 feet bsg and
65.5 feet bsg were non detect for the analytes.
Groundwater Investigation Results
Analytical results of the deepest grab groundwater sample from CPT-1 collected from 78 to
80 feet bsg were non detect for all analytes. However, since the detection limit of 1,2-DCA
was 2.0 micrograms per liter (ug/1),and the Maximum Contaminant Level (1NICL) for 1,2-
DCA is 0.5 ug/l,it is unknown if the vertical extent of the 1,2-DCA plume has been defined.
1,2-DCA was detected in all 7 wells during the last 5 quarters. Methyl tert butyl ether
(MTBE) continued to be detected in all the monitoring wells except MW-5 and MW-6,and
tert-butanol (TBA) has also continuously been detected in all the monitoring wells except
MW-4 and MW-5. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon as gasoline (TPH-g) and aromatic
hydrocarbons have been detected in all the on-site and off-site monitoring wells except
MW-4.
