The
` Report recommends eliminating 1;2-DCA, EDB, ethanol and methanol from the suite of analytes
being tested for in the water samples from the monitoring wells. EHD approves this
recommendation. The Letter recommends that the fuel oxygenates (except MTBE)and lead
scavengers be eliminated or reduced in the groundwater monitoring. EHD does not approve of.
the elimination of the fuel oxygenates(except MTBE)since TAME has been found in the
groundwater samples from MW9 since it was installed and intermittently in the groundwater
samples from other monitoring wells. SECOR may be more specific on the proposed reduction of
testing for the fuel oxygenates (except MTBE)in future reports
In the Letter it states that samples from MW©-"2 and MW-11 have detectable concentrations of ?
MTBE but they are below the maximum contaminant limits. Please be advised that the
Secondary Maximum Contaminant Revel (MCL)for MTBE in public drinking water is"5 parts per
billion(ppb). In June 2006 the water sample from MWO-2 had 7.1 ppb crf MTBE and the water
sample from MW-1 I had 8.8 ppb of MTBE,both of these water samples exceeded the MCL for s
MTBE in public:drinking water, Contaminated groundwater plumes are considered defined when
there is no detection of contaminants in the water In all directions laterally and vertically from the
source area(s);using appropiriate test methods and detection limits. Definition of the.contam nated
groundwater plume at this site has not been completed. According to the Report the groundwater
gradient was veria0101M dune 2006 rangingfrom north-northeast to tbd west so this::should be.
considered when proposing further site investigation. The Letter requests that the submittal date
for a work plan for plume delineation be revised to November 15,200&
Therefore, EHD expects a work:plan for defining the MTBE contaminant pllrme to be.submitted to.
EHD.0 Nave€Iber 1:5,:2006.
If you have"arty questions;cvntect stir at;(ZQ9)468-3449.
Donna Haran; 1 REH$;b rpetor
Environmental Health'Departmen.t
tUlargaret agyria, REHS::
Program Coc rdinator Unit IV
c tVRWQCB—Jim Barton
SECOR—Gary Haeck
. r
