The list incudes,in order of
ana lytica.1 ide-*rtiacaticn:
1. Methanol
2_ Ethanol
3. TeY.ary Butanol
1. tiiTBE
5. Di-isopropyi ether (DIFF) -
6. Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether(E T BE)
7. Teary Amvi Methvi Ethez,(TAM )
Tine Erst three are alcohols and the later four are ether"o"r. ounds. Ethanol has be°n used for
several years in Caliiorrda- W : E, as you know, bas bei used as an octane enhance-additive
since the late 1970s and is now used at a higher percentage as an oxygenate in gasolft e. Since
1995, TA,1E,manufactured by Cmvmn, has been added-bo California fuels. OIPE has been
used on the East Coas4 butze_-tdy has be---i found in Souti=i C-adfiornia mound water(May
1997). To date,we have no infornlaiionregarding the use of=in California.
The introduction of these additives present analytical problems for laboratories because of the
number or analyses refired and mal * nem- For;rs,TA 1is difficult to
distinguish because it co-elutes with benze_-m in the EPA-8020 analytical method commonly
used today. Therefore, the analytical methods conn n;ttea concurred that EPA-8260 is required
to dete-amine which compound has been used- This analytical method wuZ lucidly increase the
cost of sample analysis:but, until anod - e analytical method is developed that
can dis g—ui --i between the compourzcs,HFA 8250 is the single, provisional method of
analysis for these compounds.
Tlhis problem is fvrrher compounded because dee oil-iinermAs sruo a soime around the state
and then trade gasoline betweenoagaphic ams.
