GeoStrateg ies - yQ
.0
August 6, 1997 FILEL S SS
Mr. Dave Camille RPT 9P ~
Tosco Marketing Company QM TRANSMITTAL
Environmental Compliance Department -.23 4 5
2000 Crow Canyon Place, Suite 400 _
San Ramon, California 94583
Subject: Waste-oil UST and Remote Fill Line Soil Sampling at BP Station No. 11195, 16500 East
Louise Avenue, Lathrop, California.
Mr. Camille:
At the request of Tosco Marketing Company(Tosco), GeoStrategies(GSI) conducted a soil investigation during the
removal of the waste-oil underground storage tank (UST) at the subject site (Figure 1). The scope of work
included: collecting soil samples beneath the former waste-oil UST and remote fill line; collecting composite soil
samples from the stockpiled soil; analyzing the soil samples; evaluating disposal options for the stockpiled soil; and
preparing a report of the field activities and analytical results.
The site is an active retail station situated on the southwestern corner of East Louise Avenue and Harlan Road in
Lathrop, Califomia. Current facilities consist of a retail mini-mart, two dispenser islands, and three gasoline UST's
that share a common pit near the northern site boundary. Pertinent site features are shown on Figure 2.
WASTE-OIL UST AND REMOTE FILL LINE SOIL SAMPLING
Soil sampling was conducted by GSI in accordance with GSI Field Methods and Procedures(attached). Soil samples
collected during this investigation were submitted under chain of custody to Sequoia Analytical in Sacramento,
Cali fomis(FLAP#1624). Analytical methods and results are summarized in Table 1. Laboratory analytical reports
and chain of custody documentation are attached. On May 14, 1997, Gettler-Ryan (GR) removed one 550 gallon
waste-oil UST. The tank was transported by Erickson, Inc. to their facility in Richmond, Califonnia for destruction.
Copies of the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifests for the waste-oil UST, rinsate, and certificate of UST destruction
are attached. On June 3, 1997, GR backfilled the former waste-oil UST excavation. The compaction report is
attached.
On May 14, 1997, GSI collected soil samples beneath the former waste-oil UST (W.O.-1-10) and former remote
fill line (FL-1-3). The-soil encounteredbeneath the former waste-oil UST and the former remote fill line was a
brown sitly sand with no discoloration or hydrocarbon odor. Mr. Robert McClellon of the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division was present during the collection of the soil samples. Soil sample Iocations are
shown on Figure 3.
Soil samples W.O.-1-10 and FL-1-3 were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline(TPHg), as diesel
(TPHd), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (BTEX), Total Oil and Grease (TOG),Halogenated Volatile
Organics (HVO), Semi-volatile Organics (SVO), and CAM 5 Metals. Petroleum hydrocarbons were not detected
in soil samples W.O.-1-10 and FL-1-3. However, concentrations of chromium were detected at 5.1 (W.O.-1-10)
and 6.9 ppm (FL-1-3), nickel at 4.6 (W.O.-1-10) and 8 ppm (FL-1-3), and zinc at 20 (W.O.-I-10) and 28 ppm
(FL-1-3).
7754.61-1
3164 Gold Camp Drive, Suite 240 - Rancho Cordova, CA 95670 - (916) 631-1314 Fax (916) 631-1317
