Focused Groundwater Investigation Work Plan
Deuel Vocational Institution(DVI), Tracy, California Sampling and Analysis
4.0 Sampling and Analysis
This section describes the planned methods of the field investigation.
4.1 Permits
URS will obtain the appropriate drilling permits for the GW investigation and well installation phases of
work from the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department before field activities begins.
4.2 Utility Clearance
Before advancement of any tooling or subsurface work,Underground Service Alert(USA)will be called
at least 48 hours in advance. After all utility members have responded and/or marked their utilities at the
project site,URS will have a private utility locator conduct utility clearance at each intrusive location.
During this utility clearance, a 10-foot by 10-foot area surrounding each intrusive location will be cleared.
4.2.1 Field Activities
Field activities will include collecting grab GW samples from three soil borings in the vicinity of MW-
9BP. The analytical results of the grab GW samples will determine if permanent GW MWs are required.
If required,up to three permanent GW MWs will be installed adjacent to the soil boring locations. Soil
boring locations are shown on Figure 8.
4.3 Groundwater Sampling
GW sampling will be used to assess VOC contamination present in GW surrounding MW-9-BP and to
determine the health risk to future occupants or residents of the property.
4.3.1 Phase 1 - Groundwater Sample Collection
The initial phase of GW investigation will be performed by collecting and analyzing grab GW samples.
• Each boring will be advanced into GW using direct-push technology(DPT)to allow for the
collection of grab GW samples.
• Using a Hydropunch or equivalent technology, a small-diameter,hollow push rod with a closed
configuration filter tip will be advanced to the GW collections depth.
• Once at depth, the push rod will be retracted to expose the filter screen and allow GW to infiltrate
the inlet screen.
• GW samples will be collected by a dedicated, single-use,high-density polyethylene bailer or a
decontaminated stainless steel bailer that will be lowered through the push rod to the screened
section to retrieve the GW sample.
• GW will be transferred from the bailer into the appropriate pre-cleaned sampling containers
supplied by the laboratory, labeled with the time and date of collection, project and sample
identification codes, the sampler's initials, the type of analysis to be performed, and the
preservative used, if any.
• The sample bottles will be placed in sealable bags and on ice in an insulated cooler, parceled
appropriately for shipment, and will be accompanied by the appropriate chain-of-custody
documentation.
4-1
