Focused Groundwater Investigation Work Plan Deuel Vocational Institution(DVI), Tracy, California Data Acquisition and Quality Assurance/Quality Control 5.7 Data Quality Management 5.7.1 Data Handling Systems The following sections describe the process for handling data in terms of data generation,review, and routing for field sampling data. The procedures identified in previous sections describe the recording of measurements on data collection forms. This section discusses the monitoring and controls established to track field data through field form completion,review, and correction. Field Form Completion Data collection procedures and field documentation will be recorded on field forms and the project field notebook. Examples of the field forms are provided in Appendix A. Field Review and Correction After completion of field data and analytical sampling paperwork, substantial efforts will be made to ensure that the recorded information is accurate, complete, and legible. Data review and correction protocols have been established for both field- and office-specific data collection and processing. Technical personnel will document and review their own work and be accountable for its correctness. The intent of the review is to ensure that all forms are completed, are legible, and possess the required data elements. Sample Shipment Paperwork Specific review considerations will be made for sample shipment paperwork. Before analytical samples are shipped from the field to the laboratory,the completed chain-of-custody paperwork will undergo thorough QC checks. First, a check will be performed by field personnel after all chain-of-custody forms and labels have been completed. Completion will include completing all necessary fields, except the chain-of-custody time relinquished field and having the sampler sign and date the form after completion of the review. The reviewer will ensure that the following is completed: • All forms and sample labels will be completed using a blue or black ballpoint pen. If an error is made on any form,the error will be struck with a single line,the correct value will be written as close to the old value as possible,and the correction will be initialed and dated. The incorrect value will not be written over or obliterated in any way. • If any sample shipment or paperwork errors occur,the errors will be corrected, signed, and dated. In addition to the above reviews,the designated reviewer also will evaluate the following: • adherence to the project schedule, • correct use of sample numbers, • correct types and numbers of sample bottles, • specification of preservation where necessary, • dates,times,and initials of corrections, and • correct chain-of-custody transfers between field personnel. 5-7
