i
ilk
M
22 May 2002
AGE-NC Project, No .01 -0877
limits in the soil samples analyzed. Analytical results of the samples collected beneath the USTs are
presented on Table L
r
j 2 . 3 . PRELIMINARY SITE ASSESSMENT
On 04 January 2002, four soil borings were advanced at the site to collect soil and ground water
samples as described in the AGE-prepared Preliminary SiteAssessment WorkPlan, dated24 October
2001 . TPH-g, TPH-d and TPH-mo were detected in the soil samples collected from borings 131
l through B4 at concentrations ranging from 0.38 mg/kg to 8, 100 mg/kg TPH-g, 400 mg/kg to
5,500 mg/kg TPH-d and 200 mg/kg to 9,200 mg/kg TPH-mo. Total recoverable petroleum
hydrocarbons (TRPH) was detected in the soil samples collected from borings B 1 through B4 at
l concentrations as high as 36,000 mg/kg (134-30). One or more BTEX compounds were detected in
J the samples collected from borings Bl through B4, with the exception of the 15-foot soil sample
from B3 , at concentrations as high as 45 mg/kg benzene, 630 mg/kg toluene, 150 mg/kg -
I
ethylbenzene and 760 mg/kg total xylenes (B4-30). Seven additional volatile organic compounds
were detected in the soil samples at concentrations ranging from 0.010 mg/kg to 440 mg/kg. Fuel
additives were not detected at or above laboratory reporting limits in the soil samples .
TPH-g and TPH-d were detected in the ground water samples collected from borings B 1 through B4
at concentrations as high as 5 ,400,000 micrograms per liter (µg/1) and 390,000 µg/1, respectively.
TPH-mo was detected in the ground water sample collected from boring B2 at a concentration of
12,000 µg/l. BTEX compounds were detected in the same samples at concentrations as high as
210,000 µg/1 benzene, 540,000 µg/1 toluene, 630,000 µg/1 ethylbenzene and 3, 820,000 µgd total
xylenes (B3) . Oil and grease was detected in the samples collected from Bl , B2 and B3 at
concentrations as high as 1 ,500,000 µg/1 (133). BTEX compounds were detected in the groundwater
J samples at concentrations as high as 8 . 5 µg/1 benzene, 150 µg/1 toluene, 120 µg/1 ethylbenzene and
1 ,300 µg/1 total xylenes. Seven additional volatile organic compounds were detected in the ground
water samples at concentrations ranging from 2, 100 µg/1 to 2,000,000 µg/1. Fuel additives were not
I detected at or above laboratory reporting limits in the ground water samples.
A cross-section depicting the general lithology and the concentrations of contaminants in the soil
l beneath the site is illustrated on Figure 3 ; analytical results of soil and ground water samples are
[ J summarized in Tables 2 and 3 . To date, the vertical and lateral extent of impacted soil and ground
_ water has not been defined.
I - Amore detailed description of the previous investigation at the site can be found in the
AGE-prepared Preliminary Investigation and Evaluation Report (PIER), dated 20 March 2002.
IJ
I
Advanced GcoEnvironmental, Inc.
1
LJ
