Stunk—The sump located on the east side of the egg processing g
found to contain low concentrations of motor oil. No solvents or other hydrocarbons
were present. The sump was pumped out on June 15, 1998 and at that time it was
discovered that the sump actually has two chambers. A pipe connects these two
chambers about half way to the bottom. The primary chamber of the sump is
approximately 8 feet deep and the bottom contains more then a foot of dirt and oily
sludge. The structure and contents of the second chamber are unknown.bacteria and petroleum
6. Domestic Well — The domestic well was tested for nitrate,
hydrocarbons. Both the nitrate and bacteria were not detected, while both oil and
gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons were found to be present.
7. Retention Pond Soil — Storm water from the maintenance yard flowed into the retention
pond. Therefore, it was recommended that soil samples be collected and tested for
petroleum hydrocarbons. Test results show that motor oil contamination has occurred to
the soil of the Pond. It is interpreted that petroleum hydrocarbon contamination may
have been washed into the Pond during storm events.
Given the data gathered during this investigation and presented above, Geological Technics
Inc. concludes that adverse environmental impact has occurred from the past operation of the
facility. Listed below are the recommendations for each of these conclusions.
Recommendations
The following recommendations are made:
1. 1.000-gallon USTs — No further testing or investigation is recommended and that these
two tanks be closed.
2. 10.000-gallon USTs - No further testing or investigation is recommended and that these
two tanks be closed.
I Septic Tank—The gasoline contamination that exists at the east end of the former 10,000
USTs should be investigated to further define the lateral and vertical extent.
4. 10.000-gallon AST — The diesel and gasoline contamination sourced from the 10,000-
gallon AST should be investigated further to determine the lateral and vertical extent.
5. Sump — The dirt and sludge in the primary chamber should be loosened by jetting and
then pumped out. The concrete slab covering the second chamber should be removed and
the chamber emptied. Once that has happened, the sumps should be inspected for cracks
and holes that would allow contaminated water to seep out. The soil outside of the two
sumps should also be tested for petroleum chemicals.
6. Domestic Well — Further investigation of the well should be performed, including well
construction, well casing integrity inspection, source of contamination found in the well,
and additional chemical testing.
7. Retention Pond Soil —Further investigation of the petroleum hydrocarbon contamination
in the soil of the Pond should be performed to determine the extent of contamination
The additional investigation could be accomplished by various methods, including:
• Screening methods such as a Soil Gas Survey could be used to determine the lateral
extent of contamination and other areas of potential contamination.
• Borehole drilling, soil & groundwater sample collection, sample testing for geochemical
and geophysical parameters.
