I
Project No 58080-06-02
May 5, 1995
' naturally occurring microorganisms The proximity of the plume beneath the southern portion of
the site to the groundwater surface poses risks associated with the infection of water for
-t bioremediation The leaching of hydrocarbons to groundwater could occur and would necessitate
a groundwater treatment system to contain and treat leached hydrocarbons Groundwater treatment
' would result in the withdrawal of VOCs from beneath the site and would result to prohibitively
expensive groundwater treatment The risks and prohibitive cost of in-situ bioremediation eliminate
this option from further consideration
v 5 7 Full Scale Vapor Extraction
' The VET described herein was performed to evaluate the technical feasibility of employing in-situ
vapor extraction at the site Vapor extraction has proven to be one of the most successful in-situ
soil treatment technologies for the removal of volatile compounds such as BTEX from vadose zone
soil
The results of the VET performed for this site indicate that vapor extraction is feasible and an initial
start-up mass extraction rate of approximately 100 pounds per day of TPHg per well can be
' expected An effective radius of influence between 50 and 100 feet (dependent upon the extraction
flowrate) could be established to capture hydrocarbons that exist offsite, beneath the adjacent
' roadways
It is estimated that a vapor extraction process capacity of approximately 200 to 300 scfm over a
three year period of time would be required to capture all TPHg impacted soil The estimated cost
' to construct, operate and maintain such a VES would be approximately $250,000 to $350,000
A full scale VES does nota ear to be warranted because the
appear potential for the leaching of
hydrocarbons into groundwater appears to exist only beneath the southern portion of the site
Because removal of the hydrocarbons beneath the southern portion of the site can be accomplished
-28-
