I. INTRoouCTION
• Three soil samples from the Thorpe Oil site were received on November 11, 1881 and
assessed for the feasibility of using biological treatment as an effective method for soil
remediation The soil was subjected to tests which Included soil characterization,
microbial enmeration, soil respirometno test and TPH analysle(both by IR method and
GC/FID).
II SOIL CHARACTSRISTICS
Three representative soils from the site were analyzed for the various parameters which
affect petroleum hydrocarbon degradation In the soil. These analysis Included water
holding capacity, soil density, total organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorous, and sell pH.
The results obtained are summarized in Table 1.
The Thorpe Oil soil is a densely packed silty material, with signs of clay, of light to
medium brown color with a high water holding capacity, The soil becomes very clay-like
upon the addition of excess water (20-30%) and therefore, difficult to mlx. The soil
shows no visible signs of contamination(le etatning) but has a strong odor of light
petroleum hydrocarbons. The corresponding TPH readings were low Indicating either
loss due to volatilization of contaminant, biodegradation or weathering. The results also
Indicated that Thorpe Oil sod was phosphorous and nitrogen limited and further
supplement of nutrients will be needed for bloremedlation. The soil samples have pH
within the optimum range and no adjustment will be required Initlalty for bioremediation
since most of the soil microorganisms are known to grow and actively metabolize
• petroleum hydrocarbons at the range of pH detected.
TABLE 1: NUTR15NT CHARACTERISTICS
Parameters SMPL #1 SMPL #3 SMPL #5
Moisture Content(%) 970+005 10.67 10.87
Water Holding Cap.
