A 2"x6" brass tube was then pushed by hand into the aggregrate pile and
-- ,ompletely filled leaving no headspace. The ends of the brass tube were
covered with aluminum foil, plastic caps were then placed over the ends
and sealed with duct tape. An identification label was then placed on the
tube showing the sample number, date, and time obtained. The sample was
then stored in an icechest containing blue ice for transportation to the
laboratory. The hand spade used for sampling was washed in a bucket of
water containing TSP to prevent cross contamination of samples.
Under the proper Chain-of-Custody the soil samples were delivered by Milt
Tiffin to Geo Analytical Laboratories, Inc. , a State of California certified
laboratory, where the twenty (20) samples will be composited into ten ( 10)
samples (Table I ) . The ten (10-) composited soil samples will be analyzed
for BTEX while five (5) of the composited samples will be analyzed for
TPH-Gasoline and the other five (5) samples will be analyzed for TPH-Diesel.
During the collection of these soil samples no detectable petroleum odor
or apparent staining was found.
Laboratory Results
The soil 'samples were delievered to Geo Analytical Laboratories, Inc. on
September 1 , 1993, by Chain-of-Custody (Exhibit A) and were analyzed by
the laboratory on September 8, 1993. The twenty ( 20) soil samples were
composited by the laboratory into ten ( 10) samples their detection results
are shown on Table II. The laboratory results are enclosed as Exhibit B.
All ten ( 10) soil samples were analyzed for Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene,
.nd Total Xylenes. They were all reported to be non-detect for these
analytes. Composited samples AP-1&AP-2, AP-5&AP-6, AP-9&AP-10, AP-13&AP-14,
and AP-17&AP-18 were analyzed for TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) gasoline
and were reported as non-detect. Composited samples AP-3&AP-4, AP-7&AP-8,
AP-11&AP-12, AP-15&AP-16, and AP-19&AP-20 were analyzed for TPH diesel
and were reported as non-detect for diesel. These five ( 5 ) soil samples
did contain reported oil in the amounts of 220ppm for AP-4&AP-4, 380ppm
for AP-7&AP-8, 190ppm for AP-11&AP-12, 210ppm for AP-15&AP-16, and 240ppm
for AP-19&AP-20.
Conclusions
1 . Laboratory investigation of the ten ( 10) composited soil samples
analyzed for BTEX were reported as non-detect.
2. The five ( 5 ) composited soil samples analyzed for TPH gasoline were
reported as non-detect.
3. The five ( 5 ) composited soil samples analyzed for TPH diesel were
reported as non-detect for diesel, however, they were reported as
containing varying amounts of oil.
4. On September 13, 1993, the laboratory results of the soil samples
were discussed with Linda Turkatte from the San Joaquin County Public
Health Services Office and she stated that the reported contents were
not at levels to be considered a hazard. She gave verbal approval that
the aggregrate material could be moved and used as previously proposed.
Page 2
