tanks; one each from the east, north, and west walls, two from
the south wall , and two from the bottom. The locations of the
samples were chosen by Mr. Hunter, with the concurrence of Mr.
Knoll . Each sample was properly sealed, labeled, and placed on
ice by Mr. Hunter. Operations were completed at approximately
2: 00pm. The final configuration of the excavation, and the
location of the samples are shown on Plate XIII . The preserved
samples were transported to FOL laboratory under proper chain of
custody; (refer to Exhibit J. )
The results of the analysis of the samples are shown on Tables IV
& V. In the excavation which contained the gasoline & diesel
tanks, some minor amounts of BTEX & TPH-D were present in the
Htm-East sample, and a very small amount of Benzene was detected
in the sample from the east wall ; all other samples showed no
contaminants at tested levels. An analysis of the LUFT Manual
Leaching Potential worksheet revealed that the concentrations of
detected &TEX & TPH are far below the maximum allowable limits
that are acceptable for leaving in place without threatening
ground water. Therefore, no further work is required at this
site.
• The results of the laboratory analysis of the four samples from
the waste oil tank, (Table V, ) revealed that the north side was
clean, the east, south and west sides had unacceptable levels of
TPH, (oil & grease, ) and the south sample had a very minor amount
of Toluene. Because of the high levels of TPH, further work was
indicated.
On July 16, 19911 under the direction of Mr. Hunter, work
commenced to remove additional spoil from the site of the waste
oil tank , and resample for contamination. A large backhoe,
operated by Jim Wagner, (an employee of Claude C. Wood Co. , )
began removing spoil from the west wall of the pit. The
lithology consisted of fairly loose sands fir. gravels, with some
well-rounded cobbles & clay layers. A weak petroleum odor and
minor discoloration was noted. Approximately 2 feet of spoil was
removed from the west side, and about 5 feet from the bottom; no
evidence of contamination was noted at that point. Spoil was
placed on the southwest side of the excavation.
The backhoe was then relocated on the south side of the pit, and
excavation continued, removing spoil - from the south wall .
Sediments consisted of irregularly interbedded silty sands,
clays, coarse gravels, and occassional cobbles. There was a
definite petroleum odor and visible discoloration in the low
permeability sands and clays; the coarser material appeared to be
clean. Additional spoil was removed from the south side of the
pit for approximately- I0-12 ' to a depth of 20 feet until all
6
