The vapor
extraction system appears to be effectively remediating the contamination at this
site.
I
Monitoring well (MW) W-2 has not been sampled since October 1991 and it has been
reported to be bio-fouled. PHS/EHD staff made an inspection on November 16,
1993, during sampling of the monitoring wells and was informed by EMCON's
technician that the obstruction felt like metal. Since the Well Wizard dedicated
pumps were removed from the monitoring wells some time after the October 1991
sampling, PHS/EHD wonders if the pump may be lodged in MW W-2.
As noted in reportsjMW W-2A has insufficient water for well sampling, MW W-2B is
completed in a deeper zone, and MW W-2 is obstructed. Therefore, there is no
monitoring of the contamination in this area of the site. The last water sample
results in October 1991 evidenced 440 ppb benzene and 4000 ppb TPH-g. If MW W-2
cannot be cleared for sampling it should be destroyed and another monitoring well
should be installed to replace it.
If MW W-2 cannot be cleared, a work plan for its destruction and replacement
should be submitted to PHS/EHD by January 15, 1994.
If you have any questions contact Margaret Lagorio, Senior RENS, at (209) 468--
3449.
Jogi Khanna, M.D. , M.P.H.
alth Officer
Donna Heran, RENS, Program Manager
Environmental Health Division
DH/ml
C, Brown and Caldwell
C- Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
A Division of San joaquie County Health Care Services 10
