PHS/EHD has prepared the following comments for your consideration.
i
As part of a pre-tank replacement assessment, five soil borings, B1 - B5, were drilled in
October 1990. During drilling of these borings groundwater was encountered at 30 feet
below grade. Soil contamination was evidenced at 15 feet. j
The soil investigation continued with the drilling and installation of three vapor extraction
wells, B6/VW1 - B8/VW3, in July 1991. Soil contamination was not detected.
i
Five underground storage tanks (USTs) were rem ved in November 1991. The results of
soil samples collected from below the USTs at 14 feet below grade evidenced soil
contamination of up to 17,000 ppm total petroleum hydrocarbon - gasoline and 56 ppm
benzene. Extensive soil contamination was also evidenced beneath the product piping and
pump islands. Furthermore, the soil sample PLI collected at 3 feet beneath product piping
evidenced lead contamintion, 52 ppm total lead and 2.0 ppm soluble lead. The soluble lead
and petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants detected pose a threat to groundwater, based on
seasonal high depth to groundwater at 50 feet (Spring 1986). A groundwater investigation
was requested.
The USTs were replaced in November 1991 and soil samples collected at 12 feet within the
new tank cavity did not detect contamination.
A groundwater investigation was initiated and the soil investigation continued in October
1992. Eleven soil borings B9 - B19 were drilled of which four were converted into vapor
extraction wells, SB12/VW4 - SB15/VW7 and four were converted into monitoring wells,
B16/MW1 - B19/MW4.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health fare Services 10
