E. SOIL MATRIX SAMPLING
Discrete soil samples were collected for laboratory analysis at selected depths in all borings.
Disposable gloves (changed between each sample) were utilized to limit cross-contamination
between samples. Soil samples were collected in ten-inch-long by 1.5-inch-diameter clear
acetate sleeves cut from 4-foot-long sampling sleeves (direct-push samples). The soil samples
were sealed with TeflonTM sheets, capped, and placed in a cooler maintained at 4°C with ice.
Soil samples were transferred to a California-certified fixed-base laboratory(Enviro-Chem) for
analysis under chains-of-custody.
All soil samples were analyzed for VOCs via USEPA Method 8260B and Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons (TPH - carbon-chain lengths identified) via USEPA Method 8015B. In addition,
the eight soil samples were analyzed for the following:
- SVOCs, by USEPA Methods 8270
- Organophosphorus pesticides by 8141A
- Organochlorine pesticides by 8081
- Chlorinated herbicides by 8151A
- CAM-17 metals by 601013/7400 (heavy metals identified in the California Administrative
Manual, now Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations).
The soil samples submitted for analysis (SV-5, SV-7, SB-101, SB-103, SB-104, SB-106, SB-
109, SB-110) were selected based upon proximity to areas of potential concern as detected by
geophysical survey and visual observations (i.e., the septic tank, potential USTs, etc.). In
addition, two soil samples from the groundwater borings (GW-1 and GW-3) were also
submitted for the analyses above for a total of 12 soil samples.
Laboratory reports are provided, together with the chains of custody, in Appendix C.
The borings were backfilled with bentonite and surface-patched with concrete per industry
standard. Those that reached groundwater were backfilled under SJCEHD oversight.
F. GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Groundwater was encountered at 27 feet bgs in all four temporary groundwater monitoring
wells installed (GW-1 through GW-4). Based upon groundwater information from the
southern adjoining LUST site indicating a northeasterly direction of flow, one boring (GW-2)
was placed in a on the southeast corner of the Site), one inside the building (GW-3), one
adjacent to the septic tanks (GW-1), and one at the northwest corner of the property(GW-4).
Refer to Figure 3 for well locations.
Groundwater samples were collected with disposable bailers from each temporary monitoring
well.
