Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta extends
approximately 48 miles north from Tom Paine Slough to Clarksburg, California and
approximately 31 miles from Stockton to the east end of Suisin Bay. The Delta is bounded to the
north, east, and south by Quaternary sediments filling the Central Valley and to the west and
southwest by sedimentary rocks of the Coast Ranges of California.
Delta sediments are fine-grained compared to valley fill sediments because of the low gradients
of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers through the delta. Delta sediments are composed
primarily of silt and clay with minor sand and gravel. Delta sediments also contain large
quantities of organic soils (muck) and less abundant peat (Tetra Tech EM Inc. 1998).
The delta deposits underlying RRI are laterally contiguous with coarser-grained valley fill
deposits in the San Joaquin Valley to the east (Tetra Tech EM Inc. 1998). The surface exposure
of the contact between the valley fill and delta deposits is located approximately 1.25 miles east
of RRI. Significant quantities of groundwater are not produced from the delta deposits because
delta deposits are fine grained and/or contain brackish groundwater at most locations (Tetra Tech
EM Inc. 1998). However local occurrence of fresh (non-brackish) groundwater has been
recognized in the delta deposits.
Rough&Ready Island 3 Tetra Tech,Inc.
Revised Draft Work Plan November 18, 1998
